“Mrs. Benson, he can’t get out until he’s sober enough. I don’t care if you have the bail for him.”

Bill Johnson put down the form he finished reading to Mrs. Benson, stood, and walked to his office. He closed the door just as the phone rang. Walking to his desk, he picked up the receiver.

“Sheriff Johnson,” he answered.

“Bill, it’s Arnie, in the record department here in Bakersfield. I got some information for you on that property out near the State park in your area.”

“Oh, right. Thanks for calling back.”

“No problem. Not much going on here, and when I found some names, I searched the database at the library to see what else I could find. Might be of help to you, but I’m not sure.”

“I’m all ears.”

“A Thomas O’Brien owned that land at one time. He invested money in building the road you wanted to know about. The newspaper had a small story on him. He was convinced that Spirit Rock was a landing site for alien spaceships and built the road to bring people to see the aliens. He disappeared suddenly, and nobody has heard from him since.”

Bill picked up a pencil and began to tap the lead point on a writing pad on his desk. “I thought it might be something like that.”

“Here’s where it gets interesting. The family—rather a nephew, named Robert Faulkner—paid the back taxes on the property and put in a claim to the title. While it was in court, he took out a mining permit. He said he had evidence that the land had titanium and began to get backers with money to go in on a mine. Suddenly, this guy disappears with their money, and the backers claimed fraud. The evidence Mister Faulkner had was actually trace amounts iridium in the soil.”

“I thought you said he was going to mine for titanium.”

“That’s right. Iridium is found where there’s titanium and nickel. It’s also found where a meteor has hit. Apparently, meteors are full of iridium, but on earth, it’s scarce. He used the iridium soil samples to dupe the investors into thinking there was titanium as well. It looks like he took their money and left the country. The FBI has been looking for him ever since.”

“Anything else, Arnie?”

“This Mister Faulkner has a long history of swindling people and according to one account, he was investigated for kidnapping for ransom in Boston but never faced charges.”

“Listen, that’s a great help. Could you fax over to our office what you have. I’d appreciate it.”

“Sure, Sheriff. Glad to help.”

Bill placed the receiver back and smiled.
